Naptosa happy with health protocols as marking of matric exam papers kick off

The National Professional Teacher’s Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) doesn’t believe the implementation of strict Covid-19 protocols will impact the marking of matric exams.
The marking of matric exam papers began at centres around the country on Monday.
Naptosa president Basil Manuel says despite the surge in Covid-19 infections, they believe all the deadlines will be met.
“If everything goes according to plan, the deadline of 18 days is achievable. However, if the unknown happens, we don’t know what could happen if there are interruptions. In terms of the normal process, we confident it can happen.”
The Department of Basic Education has implemented strict health protocols, include an increase in the number of marking centres to limit the number of people at any one venue.
“We were consulted on the protocols, we are happy with everything that is on paper, of course, the big question is going to be, have all marking centres adhere to that?” Manuel asks.
“In terms of the plans, we have no issues, but we are worried markers that arrive may be infected by Covid-19 and may be ill.
“Those who are feeling ill, let the marking centre know since we have substitutes. All systems seem to be ready for the marking to take off and we hope that we will not have major interruptions.”
