The first inmates sat for Computer Applications Technology on Tuesday, while most of the matriculants will kick off their examinations on Monday with English Paper 1.

A total of 204 inmates were registered for the examinations, but six were taken out after benefiting from the special remission of sentences.

The class of 2022 obtained an 87.5% pass rate, with eleven schools attaining an impressive 100% pass rate.

Four inmates achieved six distinctions, with the best-performing offender scoring an average of 87.9%.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale says education helps offenders build a better future for themselves.

“Education fosters a sense of self-worth and purpose among inmates. As a result, this can boost their self-esteem and reduce the likelihood of returning to criminal activities.

"Through strategic partnerships and hard work by educators and correctional officials, DCS is more optimistic of a promising future,” said Thobakgale.

Meanwhile, a total of 1 180 inmates will be sitting for Adult Education and Training (AET), while 1 471 will be sitting for Tertiary Education and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
