Nehawu calls on President Zuma to resign

The National Health, Education and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) says President Jacob Zuma should step down before his term as president ends in 2019.

The union's national executive committee made the decision at a recent meeting.
Nehawu is the first Cosatu-affiliated union to call on the president to resign.

The union says it can no longer be denied that the leadership of president Zuma is now "untenable".
Nehawu Deputy General Secretary Zola Saphetha says: "We request him to do the honourable thing in the interest of unity and the ANC."

He says while the union believes no single individual, even as President of the country, can be solely responsible for all the socioeconomic and political ills in our country, the organised working class cannot stand by idly.
"We cannot be silent when it is clear that the revolution is taking a disastrous trajectory as it needlessly lurches from crisis to crisis."
