Nehawu threatens to ‘physically remove’ NSFAS CEO

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) wants the Chief Executive Officer of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), Steven Zwane, to vacate office within five days.

The union says he will be physically removed from the office if he fails to heed the call.

Nehawu's Khaya Xaba says the time frame of the ultimatum began on Sunday and will expire on Thursday.

"He is not suitable for the position because he did not even apply. He was hired there because he is a close friend with the outgoing chairperson Mr. [Sizwe] Nxasana," says Xaba.

Nxasana's resignation came after the Minister of Higher Education, Naledi Pandor, instructed the institution to halt funding for 2019 students because a backlog in disbursing aid for the previous two years had not been cleared.

Pandor's sentiments were echoed by the SA Union of Students (SAUS) saying the situation at the financial aid scheme got steadily worse during Nxasana’s tenure.

Nehawu believes Zwane is not suitable for the position of CEO as he is not qualified.

"Therefore we feel he is not the right person to ensure that the scheme is able to do what is meant to do, to administer funds to deserving students."
