Nehawu vows to continue UP strike until demands are met

National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has vowed to continue its strike at the University of Pretoria until its demands are met.

This after the university announced that physical classes will resume at its Hatfield campus on Monday.

Last month, UP moved classes online due to the ongoing strike by workers affiliated with Nehawu, who downed tools following a deadlock in wage negotiations between the union and the university.

Nehawu declared a dispute in November after the university made a final offer of 4%, while the union's members insisted on a 7% increase, a 13th cheque, and a once-off bonus.

Nehawu's Tshwane Secretary Zolani Masoleng said they will not be intimidated by the institution.

“Unfortunately, the university is misleading the public and students because the court judgment does not interdict the strike. The strike is still ongoing, lawful and protected. The very lecturers who are supposed to give lecturers tomorrow will be out in the street, protesting against the 4%.

“The court interdict does not in any way make our strike to be weakened, our picket lines are strong. So, we will not be going back to work until our demands are met. It is up to management to come to the negotiation table and that sense must prevail,” added Masoleng.
