‘Net closing on state capture looters’ as Hermione Cronje is let loose on corrupt officials
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Civil organisations and political parties across the spectrum have welcomed the appointment of advocate Hermione Cronje to the newly established Investigating Directorate within the office of the head of the National Prosecuting Authority.
Cronje will focus on fraud and corruption allegations emanating from the several commissions of inquiry.
President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to establish the directorate, which is thought to be similar to the defunct Scorpions, during his State of the Nation Address in February.
The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution's Lawson Naidoo believes those who looted the state are fast running out of places to hide.
“The new leadership at the NPA will welcome the development which will give them greater strength to pursue such cases in the future.”
Corruption Watch director David Lewis believes the appointment of Cronje will restore credibility and confidence in the institution.
“Let’s hope it goes forward, and forwards quickly. It’s a vital institution, and to put to bed the whole state capture story.”
