New Covid-19 cases remain low, positivity rate decreases

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 1 228 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours reporting cycle.

The latest increase represents a 7.6% positivity rate – out of the 16 067 tests conducted across the country on Monday.


Gauteng remains the hardest-hit province, with 498 of the new cases.


“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng Province (41%), followed by Mpumalanga (14%). Western Cape accounted for 13%; KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 12%; North West accounted for 6%; Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 5% respectively; Eastern Cape accounted for 3%, and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.


The National Department of Health has once again reported a backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases.


This is due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.


It has reported 186 deaths and of these, 8 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.


This brings the total fatalities to 96 02.


There has been an increase of 78 hospital admissions over the past 24 hours, with 4 585 people currently receiving coronavirus related treatment in both private and public health facilities.


On the vaccine front, 60 618 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
