The number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 3 231 031.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said on Wednesday evening that 26 976 new coronavirus cases had been reported since its previous report.
This increase represents a 32.2% positivity rate.
The majority of new cases are from Gauteng (30%), followed by 22% in KwaZulu-Natal, while the Western Cape accounted for 17%.
The death toll has climbed to 90,226, with 54 new Covid-19 related deaths recorded by the Department of Health.
For the Gauteng province specifically, there have been fewer hospitalisations and deaths, in comparison to previous waves.
According to the NICD, this evidence suggests that the current wave may be milder.
Nationwide there has been an increase of 620 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
Close to 100 000 vaccines had been administered over the same period.
