Gauteng Premier David Makhura believes the number of new Covid-19 infections in the province is on the decline.

The province is currently in its fourth wave, driven by the Omicron variant.

Makhura and Health Minister Joe Phaahla joined a pop-up vaccination site at Swartkops Raceway drive-thru vaccination site in Centurion on Wednesday.

Makhura said the majority of those in hospital are unvaccinated.

“The fourth wave in Gauteng is decelerating, it is slowing down. The numbers are still high but are slowing down, we are still worried because we still have many other people who are hospitalised and the majority of them are unvaccinated, those who are on ICU the numbers are very low.”

Makhura says the Omicron variant has pushed people to vaccinate.

Phaahla warned against large gatherings during the festive season.

“This is difficult moment because many people have planned for this festive season, and they feel that this is the right time to have good time with their families.”
