The Department of Basic Education has gazetted a new set of regulations which could see teachers banned from working at any school if they are found guilty of sexual misconduct.
The new regulations were gazetted on Friday.
Other crimes that could see educators banned from teaching include sexual relationships with pupils, assault or the illegal possession of an intoxicating, illegal or stupefying substance.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has welcomed the new rules, saying it would provide "uniformity" in the public service.
"The new rules will be in line with the public service code. Other public servants do have these guidelines, but with the educators they were present but not aligned. But now they have been aligned," says the union’s Nomusa Cembi.
