New witness set to take stand at Meyiwa trial on Monday

Sergeant Batho Mogola, who was one of the investigating officers dealing with the former soccer star’s suspected murder, is one of the state’s key witnesses.

 

Mogola assisted police in tracking down accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, in May 2020. 

 

Sibiya was tracked down and arrested in Tembisa on 30 May.

 

State Prosecutor, Advocate George Baloyi, requested the court for an early adjournment as Mogola was writing an exam. 

 

“We did intimate the next witness that the state will be calling, Sgt Mogola is writing an exam today (Friday). So we request for an adjournment until Monday.”

The trial-within-a-trial, which deals with the admissibility of alleged confessions by Sibiya and accused number two Bongani Ntanzi, continues.

 

According to the state evidence, both Sibiya and Ntanzi confessed the details of Meyiwa’s murder. 

 

Sibiya allegedly pointed out aspects on the scene of Meyiwa’s death in June 2020, while Ntanzi made two confessions. 

 

Ntanzi’s first alleged confession took place on 19 June 2020 at Moroka Police Station.

 

His second confession allegedly took place on 24 June 2020 before Magistrate Vivian Cronje at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.

 

Ntanzi and Sibiya’s advocate, Thulani Mngomezulu, dispute the evidence, stating that both of his clients were viciously tortured into making the alleged statements.
