NFP to look at way forward after missing IEC deadline
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The National Freedom Party's National Working Committee (NWC) and its National Executive Committee (NEC) will be meeting on Monday to deliberate on the party's next move.
This is after the Electoral Court threw out their bid to have the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) decision to disqualify it from the Local Government Election in August reviewed.
The NFP was taken off the list of contesting parties after it missed the deadline to pay a deposit to the IEC to secure its place in the municipal polls.
The party's Sabelo Sigudu said after the NWC and NEC meeting, they will reveal their plan of action to get back onto the ballot paper.
"We believe that we should be afforded an opportunity to also contest in the upcoming election," Sigudu said.
On Saturday, following another meeting by senior party officials, those believed to be behind the bungle were suspended.
They include National Chairperson Maliyakhe Shelembe, Secretary-General Nhlanhla Khubisa, Deputy National Chairperson Scelo Mabika and the party's treasurer Xolani Ndlovu.
Shelembe and Khubisa also resigned from their positions this weekend, but Khubisa has since retracted his resignation.
Sigudu said they're having trouble locating Ndlovu, who was responsible for making sure the payment was made on time.
"The NWC and the interim structure will be working on ensuring that they find him and he gets his letter of suspension."
