Nicholas Ninow case 'not political', says #NotInMyName
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Advocacy group #NotInMyName has accused the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) of politicising the rape case against Nicholas Ninow.
Ninow was convicted of raping a 7-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Silverton restaurant in the high court in Pretoria on Monday.
"We need to perhaps educate our people, especially our political people. This is not a political case, this is about justice and is about right and wrong,” said #NotInMyName secretary-general Themba Masango.
"It is about the scourge that is facing our country. This country is a country that is at war with its women and children and we should not politicise such stupid things.”
Masango's comments come after EFF Gauteng chairperson Mandisa Mashego accused Ninow's legal counsel Herman Alberts of being drunk for representing him during the rape trial.
Mashego also accused Judge Mokhine Mosopa of showing a bias towards Alberts while being impartial towards state prosecutor Dorah Ngobeni.
The ANC Women’s League was also a constant presence throughout the four-day trial.
