Nkandla architect in hospital, unable to stand trial
Updated | By Eva Chipa
Minenhle Makhanya, who stands accused of mismanaging the
multimillion-rand upgrade of former president Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homes, is receiving
treatment in hospital.
His legal team was scheduled to start cross-examining a witness on Thursday as soon as the witness finished with her testimony.
But the Special Tribunal of South Africa says Makhanya’s wife notified them of the hospitalisation.
“We have been told that Makhanya has been hospitalized at an undisclosed hospital in Durban after being admitted on Wednesday night.
“His wife called the judge's clerk and said Makhanya was due to be discharged but he would require a further 24-hour space of confinement, therefore he would not be able to attend the trial on Thursday or on Friday.”
However the trial was due to end on Friday.
The Special Tribunal adds that Makhanya’s medical certificate has been submitted and sitting is set to continue as according to the certificate, he is only not available on Thursday.
The trial is set to resume at 10:00 on Friday.
