No agreement with DA on Tshwane mayor - Mbalula
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said on Tuesday that the party is still engaged in discussions with political parties in Tshwane ahead of the election of a new mayor in the city.
Mbalula briefed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday on the outcomes of the ANC National Working Committee meeting.
The Tshwane council is expected to elect a new mayor on Wednesday following DA mayor Celliers Brink's ousting last month through a no-confidence vote.
The ANC is yet to announce its mayoral candidate after the DA said Brink would contest the position.
Mbalula said no agreement had been reached with the DA.
"The approach of the DA, that we should either bring back Brink or nothing is not acceptable to the NWC. The ANC is continuing engagement with various parties to finalise the matter of the mayor and the executive team.
"There have been ongoing engagements with various parties on all metros in Gauteng. The Working Committee received a report on Tshwane, given the level of deterioration of service delivery and governance in the city.
"The ANC is engaging all parties that are keen to work with us to set up an inclusive, viable and effective coalition government that puts the people of Tshwane first before party political interest."
The coalition government in the city has been unstable since the 2021 local government elections due to power struggles.
