No confidence vote in Athol Trollip fails
Updated | By Algoa FM
Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip will remain in the role after yet another motion of no confidence in him did not materialise.
Opposition parties - the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), United Democratic Movement (UDM) and African Independent Congress (AIC) walked out of Thursday's council meeting - after the Patriotic Alliance (PA) switched allegiance - and sided once again with Trollip.
Last week, the PA was in discussions with the opposition alliance as part of attempts to unseat Trollip.
But that plan came to an abrupt end when the the EFF reportedly labelled the PA "a bunch of fraudsters and thugs".
At a hastily-convened press briefing following the adjournment of the council meeting, tthe PA's Marlon Daniels apologised for the drama and the role he played in it.
"Indeed, there has been a lot of issues in our view around the coalition. Like I've said in the past, we too have found ourselves in a position where you walk away from your partners for some reason or another only to kiss and make up later," he said.
