No injuries, fatalities in Kempton Park factory fire
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services have confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities during Wednesday evening’s factory fire in Kempton Park.
Firefighters battled through the night to contain the blaze at a chemical factory in Spartan.
The fire has left large areas of Ekurhuleni covered in a cloud of smoke and with a foul smell hovering over the area.
The city’s Eric Maloka said the cause of the fire is not yet known, but preliminary investigations pointed to two tankers in close proximity to each other.
Malola said one of the tankers was used to transport flammable liquids.
The fire started at an Oricol Environmental Services chemical storage and sent massive smoke around the area. There were no injuries or fatalities were recorded on site, but it took firefighters the whole night to control that fire. A team was dispatched to the area to suppress the fumes so that residents do not inhale them.
“We have used what we call a ‘foam’ to blanket the fumes so there was no need for residents to be evacuated.”
