No trains in Pretoria as cable thieves hit Metrorail line
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Metrorail says the Pienaarspoort to Pretoria line has been hit by cable thieves – and no trains were running on Friday morning.
The cables were stolen at Loftus Station.
Only the Pienaarspoort to Pretoria station line is working under level 3 of the lockdown.
Spokesperson for Metrorail in Gauteng Tony Games says the first train on Friday morning had to turn back.
"The first empty train that departed Pretoria Station towards Pienaarspoort had to turn back due to hanging wires which made it impossible for the diesel locomotive to pass.
"Metrorail technical teams are hard at work assessing the damage with a view to repair in time for the afternoon peak service."
Metrorail’s acting provincial manager Jackie Moshe says commuters will have to make use of alternative transport.
"We are deeply saddened by the malicious damage to the infrastructure and call upon the public to unite against this attack.”
