NPA heads to court to defend Shaun Abrahams

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is heading to court to appeal a court judgement that has declared the appointment of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Shaun Abrahams, unconstitutional.

A full bench of the North Gauteng High Court delivered the judgement on Friday and ordered Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to appoint a new NDPP in 60 days.
NPA spokesperson, Luvuyo Mfaku, says they applied for leave to appeal the judgement the same day the judgement was delivered.
Mfaku says Abrahams has brought stability to the prosecuting authority.
"Advocate Abrahams's appointment brought much needed stability to the NPA and under his stewardship, the NPA achieved its best performance over the last two years since its inception in 1998. In the 2016/2017 performance cycle, the organisation achieved 88% of the targets agreed to with Government,"
Mfaku also says Abrahams is committed to ensuring the NPA executes its mandate.
President Jacob Zuma, who appointed Abrahams, will also appeal the judgement.
