It's days after the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse released a report which implicates Khosa, the SACP and Basic Education Minister Blade Nzimande in corruption and financial mismanagement at the scheme.

NSFAS spokesperson Ismail Mnisi says Khosa announced during a special meeting where board members met to discuss the scheme’s state of readiness for 2024.

"During the meeting, the board chairperson, Mr Ernest Khosa, tabled a notice of a leave of absence to enable the board to deal with all allegations against him as contained in the recordings distributed by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse.

“The chairperson assured the board that he had never received any financial gratification for his personal use. The board resolved to appoint an independent legal firm to look into the veracity of the allegations against him."
