This annual meeting will include discussions about international security and global food security.

The minister’s visit comes on the back of the diplomatic spat between South Africa and the US after Ambassador Reuben Brigety accused South Africa of selling weapons and ammunition to Russia.

The ambassador claimed that the weapons were transported through a Russian ship that docked at Simon's Town naval base in Cape Town in December last year.

Ntshavheni responded saying the government does not have any records of arms being sold to Russia as alleged by the US Ambassador.

The ministry’s spokesperson Sipho Mbele says the African leaders’ peace initiative, to try and negotiate an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, will also be discussed.

“Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni will engage with relevant authorities on matters material to the initiatives announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa of the African Leaders’ Peace Mission to Russia and Ukraine. In addition, the Minister has sent a team of high-level officials to Ukraine in preparation for the peace initiative mission.”
