Nuclear will remain part of energy mix, says Ramokgopa

Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has affirmed that nuclear energy will continue to be a part of the country’s energy mix.

Ramokgopa withdrew a determination, published in the government gazette in January, that outlined the procurement of 2,500MW of nuclear power.
This decision was made to provide the public with an opportunity to comment on the procurement process.
In a media briefing on Friday, Ramokgopa emphasised that this move does not signal the government's abandonment of nuclear energy.
“Of course, there is a penalty you pay as a result of this decision…which is that you are delaying the process but we are happy to delay the process so that we are able to allow for each and every party in the country that wants to add a voice in how we are going to procure this process, for them to have the opportunity to make that submission. So, it will add another three to six months.
“Nuclear is part of the future but its important that the procurement process must be able to stand the test of time."
