NUM miners resurface after 5 days underground
Updated | By Neo Motloung
About 69 mineworkers at the Chinese African Precious Metal (CAPM) mine in Orkney, North West, resurfaced on Wednesday night.
This comes after mineworkers staged a sit-in underground at Nr 7 shaft mine.
The members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) were demanding a salary increase and a living wage allowance.
NUM spokesperson, Bonginkosi Mrasi, says the union is satisfied that the miners got their demands.
"We managed to secure an 8% increase that was never there before for both categories that we bargained for. We managed to get a R900 living out allowance."
Mrasi adds the agreement with the mine is just a start, and the union will engage with CAPM from October.
"We are grateful job grading is going to be done, and people are going to be put in a proper paying permanent system."
