Numsa to go ahead with national congress
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says its Central Committee has amended the union’s constitution to allow its congress to go ahead.
It follows the Labour Court blocking the meeting until the union acts in accordance with its constitution.
But now Numsa says the Central Committee has amended the constitution.
The court found the suspensions of Numsa deputy president Ruth Ntlokotse and 30 others to have been unlawful.
Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says suspended members will be allowed to participate.
“The individuals who were previously suspended will be permitted to attend the Congress and exercise their right to vote and to be nominated and elected for office.
“However, this occurs without prejudice to Numsa to proceed with appropriate disciplinary action against anyone who has misconducted themselves or who had brought the name of Numsa into disrepute.”
