NUMSA warns deployment of more cops not enough to curb crime

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) on Monday welcomed the deployment of new police officers ahead of the festive season.
At the same time, the union warned that a reduction in crime would require more than just an increase in the number of boots on the ground.
Police Minister Bheki Cele announced on Sunday that 10 000 additional officers will be deployed on the ground to strengthen police visibility and fight crime over the festive season.
NUMSA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the country must address the system which breeds violence and crime in the country.
"Poverty and inequality are significant drivers of crime in South Africa. High levels of unemployment, lack of economic opportunities, and the legacy of Apartheid contribute to these conditions.
"The consumption and abuse of alcohol, and drugs, which is a result of social exclusion and marginalization, contributes to many violent crimes. Structural violence is entrenched in unequal power relations which are embedded within our society, and the basis for violent crime."
Hlubi-Majola warns that merely deploying more officers would not bring down the crime rate.
"We cannot solve our high crime problems, without tackling the system which is responsible for promoting suffering and violence of the masses."
