Matthews has been axed by the rail agency for failing to disclose the fact that he holds dual citizenship.

This meant he failed to get security clearance from the State Security Agency.

Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the union always felt that he was not the right person for the job.

“He treated employees with total disdain and he did not make any effort to address the crisis of rampant mismanagement at Autopax. He had no plans to turn Autopax around, and he refused to assist in devising a mechanism to ensure that workers at Autopax were paid their outstanding salaries.

“Employees at Autopax are often subjected to delays in their salary payments because Autopax is being mismanaged. There were delays in the payment of salaries for October and September. Out of frustration workers went to Prasa offices to picket and they even marched to the National Department of Transport.”

Hlubi-Majola says since Matthews’ suspension last month, workers were paid their outstanding October and the November salaries.

“At the same time, a business rescue practitioner has been appointed to Autopax and the first official meeting with him is next week on the 8th of December. We hope that the business rescue process will result in a viable turnaround strategy for the business, because ultimately, that is what workers have been fighting for.

“They want to work in a viable business and all they want is good management team to make the entity sustainable in the long term.”
