NW CFO appointment a national embarrassment: Motsoaledi
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi wants the Special Investigating Unit to probe a top North West government official.
Kudakwashe Mpofu, who is a Zimbabwean national, managed to gain employment with a fake residency permit.
Mpofu has been fighting to stop the department from deporting him back to Zimbabwe.
Mpofu previously filed papers in the high court of Pretoria to force Motsoaledi and his director-general Tommy Makhode to declare his residence documents valid.
Last year, Mpofu obtained a court interim order which stopped the two from deporting him.
He obtained the order after Motsoaledi and Makhode failed to file a notice of intent to oppose his application.
On Sunday, Motsoaledi said they are investigating how Mpofu got hold of the control number on his documents.
“According to our records Mr Kudakwashe Mpofu’s permanent residence permit is fraudulent, it was not issued by the Department of Home Affairs and we do not know where he obtained it from.
“We can confirm that the permanent residence permit reference number, appearing on Mr Mpofu’s document does not exist in our systems and we can further confirm that the control number appearing on Mr Mpofu’s purported document was not issued by the department to him but rather it was legitimately issued to somebody else. As to how Mr Mpofu came to that control number, we do not know. It’s a matter we are investigating.
“It is a matter of national embarrassment that Mr Mpofu was able to obtain employment as a Chief Financial Officer at the North West Department of Economic Development, handling public funds."
Mpofu is expected to appear in court on 9 May to argue against his deportation.
