A North West lawyer has appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on charges related to defrauding the Road Accident Fund.
Fifty-year-old Emanuel Mesele Tau appeared in court on Monday.
Tau’s court appearance followed his earlier arrest for allegedly defrauding a client who had lost her husband in a car crash
The client requested Tau to help her file a claim with RAF, but when the payment of R763 195 was made in 2014, he kept the money for himself.
“In 2021, after allegedly many failed attempts to get hold of the attorney, the widow reported the incident to the police. The case was subsequently transferred to the Hawks for further probing, resulting in the recent arrest of the attorney,” said North West Hawks spokesperson Tlangelani Rikhotso.
Tau has been released on R5000 bail and will be back in court on 8 August.
