The North West man was arrested last week after the lifeless body of four-year-old Tshimologo Lotshabeng was found in the bushes.

She had been raped and strangled.

Provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Henry Mamothame says Johannes Bafana Mans is a friend of the girl’s mother.

“It is alleged that Patricia Neo Lotshabeng (32) who is the victim’s mother together with Mans and her female friend were drunk, walking from a tavern to the friend’s house on the early hours of 15 May.

“Tshimologo was left with six other children at the friend’s house where they were going to from the tavern. Mans then attempted to rape Patricia but her friend intervened and stopped him.

“After his failure to rape Patricia, it is alleged that he then waited for her and her friend to fall asleep. He then kidnapped the child and took her to the nearby bushes where he raped and killed her,” Mamothame explains.

The matter was postponed to 31 May for further investigations and legal representation.

“He is remanded in police custody until his next court appearance,” Mamothame says.
