NYE road closures in Newtown, thousands to converge on FNB Stadium for Bushiri gathering

The JMPD says traffic will be managed around roads near the FNB stadium in Soweto on New Year's Eve (NYE) as thousands of worshippers of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG), led by controversial Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, are expected to converge.

The church will be holding its Crossover Service, which will run for 12 hours, starting at 6pm.

Bushiri and his wife Mary face charges of fraud, money laundering and the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act for offences they allegedly committed from 2015.

One of the charges relates to exchange control regulations and involves foreign currency of $1 147 200 (around R15m at the time), News24 reported.

The pair will go on trial in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria between July 27 and August 28 2020.

JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar says the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown will also be blocked on January first for a New Year’s concert.

"The concert will start at 5am until 5pm. Motorist should avoid Henry Nxumalo street, Lilian Ngoyi street, Rahima Moosa street, and Miriam Makeba street," said Minnaar.
