Officials arrested for fraudulent roadworthy certificates

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Hawks have arrested three officials, including an examiner, at a private vehicle testing station in Rustenburg.

Arrest

The officials and examiner are accused of issuing fraudulent roadworthy certificates.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane says the arrests followed an undercover operation by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit in Rustenburg.

"The unit identified the runner, who touts business on behalf of the testing station, and entered into a transaction to have a motor vehicle roadworthy certificate issues without doing the prescribed tests," Zwane says.

Zwane says the runner accepted R1200 from the undercover agents to facilitate the issuing of the certificate.

"The examiner is accused of fraudulently certifying a vehicle as roadworthy although the said vehicle was not presented to him and he did not conduct the necessary tests. The clerk is facing charges of processing and issuing a fraudulent certificate, while knowing that such a vehicle was not presented for testing,"  says Zwane.
