One dead & several injured in Vereeniging accident
A man died and several others were injured when a taxi and a car collided on the R82 near Vereeniging in Gauteng on Wednesday, paramedics said.
ER24 and Netcare 911 provided different figures for the number of injured people.
ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said eight people were injured in the accident, among them a 10-year-old boy airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.
Meiring said the seven others sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to various hospitals.
Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann, however, put the injured figure at 13 and said they were all school children.
She confirmed the boy was airlifted to hospital and said the remaining 12 children were treated on scene before being taken to hospital.
Steinmann said it was alleged that the minibus overturned after a tyre burst.
Meiring said when ER24 arrived on scene the taxi was found lying in the veld.
"Some of the patients were lying around the vehicle. On inspection, paramedics found the lifeless body of the taxi driver lying next to his vehicle. Unfortunately the man had already succumbed to his severe injuries," he said.
