Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The O.R Tambo International Airport was evacuated on Monday after airport officials found an unattended bag.

Airport spokesperson, Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, says upon discovering the bag they activated the airport canine unit and called the South African Police Services.
"SAPS was on the scene together with our canine unit and SAPS took over the investigation to look at what's in the bag and its impact," Gunkel-Keuler says.
"A part of the safety and security protocol is to ensure that we evacuate the scene around the affected areas as a precautionary measure, and that's exactly what happened," Gunkel-Keuler explains.

"The safety and security of our passengers as well as staff working at the airport is paramount," she says.
Gunkel-Keuler says they received word from the police that the area is safe and the airport is open again.
"From an airport management position we can confirm that we are now optimal again," Gunkel-Keuler concluded.
