Outgoing Ekurhuleni mayor confident ANC will stay in power

The outgoing mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mondli Gungubele, says he is confident that agreements with smaller parties will see the ANC remain in power in the area.
The Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality will on Tuesday hold its inaugural council meeting where its mayor, speaker and chief whip will be elected.
The council is expected to elect the ANC's Mzwandile Masina as mayor.
No party has an outright majority following the local government election.
However, the ANC is expected to cobble together enough support from smaller parties to retain the metro.
Gungubele said the ruling party is disappointed after they lost the mayoral positions in Tshwane and Johannesburg.
"The bottom line is, democracy is alive in South Africa. I guess, as a ruling party, having been the champions of bringing this system in place we are also called upon to be the champions in actually executing it whether we are in opposition or in leadership positions," he said.
He said they party has been reassured of a victory.
