Outstanding reports stall Mkhwanazi pre-sentencing proceedings

Convicted serial killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi is yet to undergo mental assessment despite the court having made the order nearly two months ago.
Mkhwanazi appeared briefly in the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Wednesday where the matter was postponed to next Friday.
The 22-year-old was convicted on six counts of rape, six counts of murder, and another six counts of defeating the ends of justice for killing and concealing the bodies of six sex workers in the Johannesburg CBD.

Mkhwanazi was arrested following the discovery of the women's decomposed bodies at his father's car repair workshop in October 2022.
Judge Cassim Moosa confirmed that pre-sentencing proceedings in the multiple murder case could not continue due to several outstanding reports, including the probation officer's report, victim impact statement, and the risk assessment report to be done at the Sterkfontein psychiatric hospital.
"On Friday, when you return, this court will then make the order for your risk assessment to be conducted from Monday."
When delivering the guilty verdict, Moosa ordered that Mkhwanazi should undergo mental observation to determine whether he was a dangerous criminal.
From Monday, it's expected that Mkhwanazi will spend a month at the facility before the mental evaluation report can be made available.
