Over 14 000 South Africans still in hospital for Covid-19 treatment

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says its latest data shows that 14 040 people are currently receiving Covid-19 treatment in both public and private facilities across South Africa.
A further 331 people were admitted to hospitals during the latest 24-hour period up to Monday evening.
A further 299 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 77 440.
There were 7 983 new Covid-19 cases nationally, with the latest increase representing a 21.1% positivity rate.
The majority of new cases were from Western Cape with 27%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 24% and the Eastern Cape accounted for 18% of the country’s total cases.
After being the country’s epicentre for the third wave, Gauteng has recorded another decrease in daily infections – reporting 694 new cases.
The institute says the 7-day average number of cases has increased.
On the vaccine front, 158 103 Covid-19 vaccines were administered.
