Over 14,000 prisoners ready to vote - govt

The Department of Correctional Services said on Thursday it is ready to conduct elections at its facilities during next week's general elections.
A total of 14 753 inmates are set to cast their votes at the country's various prisons.
Only two party agents per political party will be allowed to observe the voting process due to limited space, and taking into consideration the security assessment of correctional centres.
However, independent observers will be allowed to monitor the election process within correctional facilities.
Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola said the government is commitment to upholding the democratic rights of citizens to vote, including those in our correctional system.
“The measures we have put in place are designed to ensure that eligible inmates can exercise their right to vote in a secure and transparent manner.
"Hence, this initiative marks a significant step forward in ensuring that our democratic processes are inclusive and just,” said Lamola.
Inmates who registered as voters before admission to a correctional centre will be allowed to go to their centre and cast their vote.
"The transfer and release or placement of inmates on the voting date will be managed in such a way that it does not impede their right to vote."
