Over 4000 new Covid-19 cases in SA

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says there were 4 100 new Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday evening.

This brings the country’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 594 499.


The latest increase pushes the positivity rate to 10.5%.


Gauteng continues to account for the majority of new infections.


The province recorded 1 170 new cases on Thursday.


“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (29%), followed by Western Cape (15%). Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 13%; Limpopo and Mpumalanga each accounted for 12% respectively; North West accounted for 8%; Free State accounted for 5%; Eastern Cape accounted for 4%, and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.


The National Department of Health has reported another backlog in Covid-19 mortality cases.


This is due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.


It has reported 160 Covid-19 related deaths and of these, 34 occurred in the past day or two. 


This brings the total fatalities to 94 651.


There has been an increase of 152 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 5 886 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.


On the vaccine front,  71 695 Covid-19 vaccines were administered on Thursday.
