Frustrated parents have taken to social media early this morning, complaining that they cannot log in to register Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils for 2017.

The online service opened Monday morning in a bid to avoid long registration queues at schools.

Oupa Bodibe from the province's department of education admits there's a problem with the IT providers.

"As they were [opening] the system there were people going onto the system and it caused problems on one of the servers," he said.

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, on Sunday launched the province's Online Learner Admission Campaign to encourage parents to register their children for the 2017 academic year using a convenient online method.

The learner admission period for 2017 will officially start on 11 April 2016 and end on 7 September 2016.

"Parents should register their details online if applying for the first time.  They should also verify details if already registered in 2015 or having a child in the Gauteng Department of Education system. Ensure that they submit the required documents to the schools you would have applied at within 14 days .You cannot apply online if not registered," the department said.
