Government has been criticised for going on a spending spree for ministers.

Scopa has called for a cap on spending, alluding that the Department of Public Works has become reckless.

Chairperson, Themba Godi says officials are taken for a ride from "all sorts of characters who want to make a quick buck."

"There has to be a cap and consideration of the economic realities of the country. For the ordinary man out there, spending half a million rands on braai places for three houses - it will be difficult to convince that it is justifiable."

Officials are set to be called to Parliament next week to explain the purchases and upgrading of houses for ministers.

The department owns about 148 so-called 'prestige properties' across the country, with Godi saying a house with a price tag of R9 million has been allocated to a certain minister.

"It can't be that any price goes - there has to be a limit on the amount of money that can be spent on to buy a house of a minister."
