Parties should unite to fight xenophobic tensions: Makhura
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has called on members of all parties to work together to tackle the province's challenges.
He replied to the debate on his State of the Province Address in the provincial legislature in Johannesburg yesterday.
Makhura, firstly, called on members of various parties in the legislature to unite in opposing the current xenophobic tensions between some South Africans and foreign nationals.
"Let's say to our people don't resort to vigilantism, don't take the law into your own hands. If there are problems with foreign nationals involved in drugs, don't make it the problem of all foreign nationals," said Makhura.
Makhura also thanked opposition members for the concerns they raised, saying they should work with government to address Gauteng's various challenges.
"The leader of the official opposition - you and I agree that there has been neglect of what apartheid classified as the coloured community. We all agree. The issues you raised yesterday are the issues I have raised publicly in many meetings with this community since 2014," said Makhura.
