Parts of Roodepoort in the dark due to substation blaze
Updated | By Eva Chipa
City Power has warned residents in parts of Roodepoort that they could be without power for the next two days.
The lights went out after a fire caused extensive damage to the JG Strydom switching substation in the area, west of Johannesburg.
“The fire which started around 06:30, razed down the equipment inside the substation that include the panels and feederboards,” says the utility’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena
According to Mangena this has left areas around Weltevreden Park and Randpark Ridge without power.
“Although the fire has been put out repairs will only start after the area has cooled off and declared safe to work.
“Unfortunately we are unable to give ETR at the current moment but, based on the extent of the damage caused, we anticipate that it may take about 48 hours to do the repairs and restore electricity to the affected residents.”
