A giraffe has died after being hit by a taxi in the Kruger National Park (KNP) over the weekend.

South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Twitter a taxi carrying 13 day-visitors hit the giraffe, who then landed on the roof of a safari-vehicle.

"Indications are that a giraffe stepped into the road and the taxi could not avoid hitting it and the animal fell on top of a rental safari vehicle," said SANParks.

A doctor, helicopter, and ambulances were dispatched to the scene with the Swizz driver of the safari vehicle seriously injured.

Medical personnel stabilised him at the scene before airlifting him to hospital. His condition has been described as stable.

Two occupants of the taxi were treated for minor injuries and taken to hospital for observation, according to SANParks.

"SANParks continues to warn visitors to the KNP to observe the speed limit and be careful on the roads."

The South African Police Service (SAPS) will be conducting investigations and circumstances that led to the accident.
