In Pictures: Farewell Ahmed Kathrada
Updated | By Samkelo Maseko
Former president Kgalema Motlanthe put the cat among the political pigeons by reading the late Ahmed Kathrada's letter to President Jacob Zuma - in which he called for him to step down.
Motlanthe delivered the eulogy at the struggle stalwart's funeral.
President Zuma did not attend the funeral, saying he respects the wishes of the family.
Exactly a year ago to the day, Kathrada wrote a letter expressing his dissatisfaction with the state of the ANC and its leadership.
Former President Kgalema Motlanthe quoted the letter - which received a standing ovation from the mourners.
"Comrade Kathy took exception to the culture of feeding frenzy, moral corruption, societal depravity, political dissolution, the brawls and sleaze enveloping humans minds," said Motlanthe.
Those in attendance shouted "Resign President Jacob Zuma, resign".
Some of the political heavyweights in attendance were Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, former president Thabo Mbeki, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and EFF leader Julius Malema.
