The Midrand, Zondi, Central Camp and Orange Farm depots have all been affected by the strike.

The strike which began last week, resulted in one truck being burned while another one was damaged.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi says the situation outside the depots remain volatile.

“In some parts of the city, the current situation outside our depot is volatile and people are sort of preventing our employees from discharging their responsibilities,” says Mkhwanazi.

An insourcing process is currently underway, with priority given to those who have been working for the entity since 2010 as well former Jozi@Work employees.

“There is an insourcing process that is underway and is based on a set budget and set criteria. A crucial point is that the insourcing process is set on a set criteria and set budget. Pikitup is unable to insource everybody but can in-ource people based on budget availability,” says Mkhwanazi.

Pikitup has employed the services of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to help it collect refuse in the affected areas.
