The strike follows a similar work stoppage at the end of 2015, which resulted in refuge not being collected for weeks on end.

Pikitup's managing director, Amanda Nair, said there is no formal reason for the disruption yet.

"Speculation from our side is that we are in the process of a disciplinary [action] against six Samwu shop stewards who allegedly disrupted an interview process that was being convened last week. The disciplinary is happening today and this is a protest against the action we are taking against alleged misconduct," she said.

According to Nair, workers from municipal union Samwu are taking part in the work stoppage.

Pikitup appealed to residents to hold back their bins for the day.

"We don't have an indication as to whether this is just for today or if the illegal work stoppage will continue beyond today," Nair said.

Pikitup will update resident one more information is available.
