The learning of Kiswahili by South African pupils is seen as a major breakthrough, after the country signed a memorandum of understanding with Kenya in September 2018.
According to Motshekga the pilot program will help the department plan for next year’s implementation.
Apart from Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, Kiswahili is also spoken in parts of Uganda, DRC, Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi and Mozambique.
