The police in Gauteng have arrested a man that is suspected to be responsible for the Monaco Tavern shooting in Mamelodi in July.
The suspect, who has been on the list of police's most wanted suspects, was arrested in Mamelodi by the Tshwane Anti-Drug Unit and Mamelodi Combat Team on Thursday.
“The suspect who was found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during his arrest is linked with several cases that include car hijacking, murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm,” says police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
Police have been searching for the people responsible for the shooting when they pounced on the 25-year-old.
“It is reported that in the early hours of 11 July 2022, three suspects wearing balaclavas and armed with pistols arrived at Monaco Tavern in Mamelodi and found patrons enjoying themselves. The trio fired in the air before approaching a 33-year-old man and fatally shooting him.”
The incident followed the mass shooting at the kaMdlalose tavern in Nomzamo, Soweto, where 16 people were killed.
The suspect in police custody is expected to appear before the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday while the search for his accomplices continue.
