Police call for calm following death of young girl in Alexandra

Police in Gauteng have called for calm following the death of a ten-year-old girl after allegedly consuming what is suspected to be poisoned snacks in Alexandra, Johannesburg North over the weekend.

The 38-year-old mother, her four-year-old son and the ten-year-old daughter were rushed to medical facilities on Saturday.
However, the family's daughter passed away in the Alexandra Community Health Centre emergency unit on Saturday night.
Gauteng health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says the mother and son are in stable condition and under medical care.
"The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) confirms that a 38-year-old mother and her 4-year-old son from Alexandra in Johannesburg are currently receiving treatment at Edenvale Hospital following a suspected foodborne illness."
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi has called for calm in the community as investigations continue.
"An inquest case is currently being investigated following the incident. A team of Police Investigators in collaboration with health experts and other role players will be investigating the allegations made concerning the food consumed by the victims before to falling ill."
The 10-year-old's death comes after six children in Naledi, Soweto died due to suspected food poisoning last month.
