Police conducting a 'threat analysis' on Malema
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
National Police have confirmed that a detailed examination is underway into claims of an assassination plot against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema.
The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele has requested National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, to probe the alleged death threats.
According to the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Vishnu Naidoo, details around the probe cannot be made public, due to the sensitivity of the matter.
"Two days ago, the information was communicated to the National Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, via Minister of Police Bheki Cele, that there are alleged threats against Mr. Julius Malema."
The EFF alleges individuals from the North West have approached hit men from other provinces to carry out the attack.
"The supposed hit men approached the organisation and informed them of the people who approached them, people who apparently come from the North West, to assassinate the Commander-In-Chief," says EFF provincial leader Betty Diale.
Authorities have confirmed that they are not taking the claims lightly.
Diale could not attribute the recent spate of protest actions in the North West to the allegations.
The EFF is demanding the resignation of North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
